Bills for 2010/11 are on the way; can you expect a repeat performance?
Recap
It was with a sinking feeling that we read the recent press releasefrom the Taxman saying he'll soon be sending out tax calculations (Form P800) for 2010/11 to those not within self-assessment. Last year the issue of P800s for 2008/9 and 2009/10 caused a dtorm in the national press because so many of them showed underpayments of tax. In the end anyone with a bill of £300 or less was let off the hook.
Will you face a bill?
Many of the problems in the tax system which caused individuals to underpay tax in 2008/9 and 2009/10 remained in 2010/11. Therefore, our prediction is that many people will face a tax bill this time around, although on average we expect these to be lower simply because the P800s will cover one year and not two. The reason for these tax underpayments is no different from last year, but does this mean the Taxman will agree to write these off?
No Mercy
We'll stick our necks out and say ther's abolutley no chance of a tax amnesty. This time you'll be expected to pay every penny. The only exeption to this is where you can show that the Taxman failed to make proper and prompt use of information you sent him which would have stopped the tax bill from arising.
Tip
Always check the Taxmans calculations as he's notorious for getting things wrong.
Too Much?
Of course, not everyone will have underpaid tax, some will have refunds due. Those who the Taxman thinks have overpaid tax will recieve P800s in the next month or so and a refund shortly after, while those who owe tax can expect a bill in October or November.
Many people will face tax bills for 2010/11, but apart from rare situations the Taxman will insist on payment in full. Use our concise guide to check your tax assessment.
